Working with Students

Quirky. Brilliant. Independent. Progressive. Questioning. Unique. These are some words commonly used to describe Reed students. Of course these are good descriptions of some of our students, but not all. Reedies represent a variety of socioeconomic backgrounds, sexual and gender identities, racial and ethnic heritage, abilities, and life experiences. We try to meet students where they are developmentally, based on their individual needs.  Best of all, Reed students make our jobs fun!

“The very first day I stepped onto campus I walked into the student activities office with the intent of registering a student group and finding an advisor. The SAO staff informed me that there was no official registry and there were no advisors, but they'd be happy to help me every step of the way and point me in the right direction. Without the help of the dedicated and motivated staff in student activities, I definitely wouldn't be as involved as I am now and I certainly wouldn't have started my group. Kyle, Kristin, and Noelle have made my Reed experience a much fuller and enjoyable time, including lots of useful advice and the occasional pick-me-up from Noelle’s candy bowl.”
Louis Melendez, ’11

"The SAO is by far my favorite place on campus. The office itself is great, but the people there are what make it exceptional. They are all supportive, inclusive, funny, creative, and truly genuine individuals. They work hard to create an environment where every student feels welcome and accepted. When I felt out of place and alone on campus, the people at the SAO were there to welcome and support me as I adjusted to the social milieu of Reed. This support and friendship has grown to be an important aspect of my Reed experience. In the end, I suppose all of this is just a drawn out way of saying that these people, the students and staff in the SAO, have become an important part of my life and my family. "
Melissa Osborne, '13

"I've often heard said of Reedies that we tend to pour just as much creativity and energy into our academics as we do into having fun. We come up with some silly and off-beat ideas, like screening Jaws in the swimming pool or building a 10-foot tall angler fish head for Harvest Ball. It's not just the students who are like this--in my time working for the Gray Fund and for Orientation, I quickly realized that the staff in the Student Activities Office epitomizes that wonderful union of dedication and absurdity. That character, coupled with a commitment to support collaboration between all members of the Reed community, makes the SAO one of the liveliest, most rewarding places to work, to seek guidance, or just to decompress. The past two years at Reed were easily the best for me, and I attribute a lot of that to my time spent with the staff and students at the SAO who help nurture that spark we Reedies cherish so much."
Adrien Schless-Meier, '12

“When I come into the Student Activities Office on Reed's Campus, I know if I have any question or problem, [the student activities staff are] more than willing to help. Not only do I leave having been assisted but also with a smile and probably laughing because of the wonderful people that work there. This office is one of my personal favorites on campus.”
Austin Campbell, ’11
